Eat Celery Every Day

The other day I got an email from a friend lamenting the fact she was on a diet and weighed 2.5 pounds more than the previous day. I emailed her back and told her I had two words for her – water retention.

Whether dieting or not, water retention is a problem for many women.  I am sure men have it too, but we don’t hear a lot about “feeling bloated” or “swollen feet” from the male gender.

Celery is a wonderful natural diuretic because it contains sodium and potassium. If you suffer from edema (water retention), this is an excellent food to eat/drink on a daily basis.  For me, drinking celery is more preferable.  Eating stalks of celery is just not very appetizing to me unless they are dipped in peanut or almond butter. Celery is great juiced or pulverized in a strong blender for a smoothie.  It doesn’t have a strong flavor and easily mixes with other fruits and vegetables.

Amazing Facts About Celery

Oops, I used the word “amazing”.  I saw a post on Facebook the other day that the words “amazing” and “awesome” were so overused, they are now passe.  Of course everything on Facebook is true, LOL.  Well, whether we call them amazing, awesome, great or whatever, the benefits of celery rock.

Inflammation – Celery contains many inflammatory compounds and is very useful for helping combat pain.

Digestion – The high water and insoluble fiber content in celery helps encourage bowel movements.  It also helps promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Stress – Celery is high in the anti-stress mineral, magnesium, which helps soothe the nervous system.

Cancer Prevention – Several anti-cancer compounds have been found in celery which may inhibit certain types of cancer cells.  Celery also helps to alkalize the body.  Many diseases are caused by an over-acidic condition.

Cholesterol – Two stalks of celery a day can help to lower the bad (LDL) cholesterol in the body.

Blood Pressure – Celery contains compounds that help increase circulation.  Celery compounds can help relax muscles allowing vessels to dilate.

Be sure to eat celery every day.  This vegetable is awesome.  I mean great.
